Commanders could use a good young cornerback in April's NFL draft
It wouldn't hurt if the Commanders found them a good cornerback in next month's 2025 NFL draft.
The Commanders were really hurting at cornerback in 2024. Benjamin St-Juste kept getting beat or holding, Michael Davis was quite ineffective, and Emmanuel Forbes was so bad that defensive coordinator Joe Whitt determined he actually didn't need him. Forbes ended up being released during the season.
The Commanders' GM, Adam Peters, did not want to wait until the offseason and aggressively traded for the Saints' cornerback Marshon Lattimore. However, Lattimore really struggled with a hamstring injury and, when returning to action, really struggled against the Eagles and Bucs.
Mike Sainristil and Noah Igbinoghene return in 2025, along with Lattimore. The Commanders signed former Auburn Tiger and New England Patriot 31-year-old Jonathan Jones in free agency. But after that, there are only questions at cornerback for Washington. If they don't get a good one in the draft, they are an injury away from a mess at corner during the season.
Kevon Seymour didn't exactly help himself last season when he tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs and was subsequently suspended by the NFL. Allan George hasn't exactly set the NFL world on fire at corner. He was with the Bengals, but Cincinnati released him in 2024, and Peters signed George to a reserve/futures contract in January. We don't know if George will make the team. This leaves cornerback Bobby Price, whom the Commanders had on their practice squad for most of 2024.
Certainly, Peters, Dan Quinn, and Joe Whitt will not bring back Michael Davis, will they?
So, though, the best way for the Commanders to build in the draft would be to trade back once or twice in this draft. The Commanders may actually need to take a corner at No. 29 if there is one they feel they must take in the first round.
This will take place in one month, on April 24, 2025.
