The Washington Commanders are bringing back a familiar name. According to John Keim of ESPN, the Commanders are signing veteran quarterback Josh Johnson to a one-year deal.
Washington is signing QB Josh Johnson to a one-year deal, per source. Johnson started three games for Washington in 2018. He played two games in 2022 with San Francisco when Washington GM Adam Peters was then an assistant GM.

Johnson, who turns 39 in May, began his NFL career in 2008 when he was a fifth-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Since then, Johnson has gone on a tour of the NFL, playing for 15 different teams. Johnson has had multiple stints with the San Francisco 49ers, Baltimore Ravens, New York Jets, and Washington. Johnson appeared in four games for the Redskins in 2018, starting three. He had a 1-2 record, completed 52 of 91 passes (57.1%) for 590 yards, with three touchdowns and four interceptions. Johnson also rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown.
Johnson was signed late in the 2018 season after injuries to Alex Smith and Colt McCoy.
Over his career, Johnson has appeared in 45 games with nine starts. His only career win as a starting quarterback came with Washington in 2018.
Johnson becomes the fourth quarterback on the Commanders' roster, joining Jayden Daniels, Marcus Mariota, and Sam Hartman. Jeff Driskel served as Washington's third quarterback behind Daniels and Mariota last season, with Hartman spending his rookie season on the practice squad.
It will be interesting to see if the Commanders keep three quarterbacks in 2025. They could keep Hartman on the practice squad again as the third quarterback, or Johnson could also fill that role if Washington seeks experience. Johnson spent time with the 49ers when GM Adam Peters was San Francisco's assistant GM.
