Cornerback is still a position that the Indianapolis Colts could explore adding to in the NFL draft, and if so, ESPN recently highlighted one Day 3 "sleeper" at the position.
With the addition of Charvarius Ward, as well as Corey Ballentine to bolster the depth at the position, the need at cornerback this offseason has been greatly diminished thanks to free agency. And along with Ward and Ballentine, the Colts also still have Kenny Moore, Jaylon Jones, Sam Womack, and JuJu Brents.
However, as one NFL exec mentioned recently, continuing to add here wouldn't be a bad thing either for the Colts, specifically, some added competition for that outside boundary role opposite of Ward, which would also then give the depth a boost as well.
But even if the Colts do view that as the case, given the other positional needs that are out there, it's likely no longer a Day 1 or even Day 2 priority for Indianapolis, which perhaps makes UT-San Antonio's Zah Frazier a name worth watching on the final day of the draft.
In ESPN's latest draft intel article, draft analysts Field Yates, Jordan Reid, and Matt Miller each highlighted one Day 3 sleeper who they really like, and it was Reid who selected Frazier.
"His combination of height, speed and ball skills are among the best of the late-round options in this class," wrote Reid. "At 6-foot-3, 186 pounds, he ran a 4.36 40 and had impressive jumps (36½ inches on vertical and 10-feet-6-inches on broad). He tied for second in the FBS with six interceptions last season, and his reactionary skills complement his size."
At 6-3, Frazier has that length at the position that we know GM Chris Ballard covets, and he was also one of the standouts at the NFL combine.
Frazier is still a relatively inexperienced player with 596 snaps over the last three seasons, 498 of which came in 2024. He would grade out really well against the run by PFF's metrics, and allowed a completion rate of 46% on 39 targets. Frazier also had terrific ball production with six interceptions and five pass breakups.
Also of note when it comes to Frazier's potential fit with the Colts, beyond his measureables and ball production, Reid added that Frazier would be best in a more zone-heavy scheme, and with Lou Anarumo at the helm, we are going to see more man coverage opportunities for the defensive backs.
