Chargers snag QB Trey Lance from Cowboys' FA heap, unite him with Jim Harbaugh

Trey Lance gets another shot in the NFL and this time its a return back to the West Coast.

The Los Angeles Chargers signed the former Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers signal caller to a one-year deal worth up to $6.2 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Lance, 24, joins a Chargers quarterback corps led by Pro Bowler Justin Herbert. He'll compete for the backup role alongside veteran Taylor Heinicke, who re-signed with Los Angeles earlier this offseason.

Depending on the amount of the non-incentive portion of the contract, Lance could figure in the Cowboys' comp pick formula for 2026. Lance who went unsigned during the March free agency period was added to the negotiating list of the CFL's Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Instead, the former No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft will return to the Golden State, where he spent the first two seasons of his career with the 49ers, appearing in eight games with four starts. Lance was traded for a fourth-round pick to the Cowboys during the 2023 preseason and appeared in just four games during his two seasons in Dallas, making one start in the 2024 regular-season finale—a 23-19 loss to the Washington Commanders a game in which he finished 20-of-34 for 244 yards.

Dallas recently traded with the Patriots to acquire Joe Milton III as Lance's replacement. In exchange, the Cowboys sent a fifth-round pick for the second-year QB and a seventh-round draft selection. Milton will compete for the Cowboys' backup position with Will Grier, which was held by longtime backup Cooper Rush, who left in free agency to sign with the Baltimore Ravens.
