After leaving last night’s game against the Minnesota Wild with blood dripping from his face, Vancouver Canucks forward Derek Forbort is now slated to miss the remainder of the 2024–25 season. While this may not come as a surprise given the fact that the Canucks only have two games left this season, the severity of the injury is arguably worse than what was expected.

“He broke his orbial bone. So obviously he’s out for the year,” Canucks Head Coach Rick Tocchet said of Forbort’s injury.

Forbort sustained his injury in last night’s game after fighting Wild forward Yakov Trenin. After he was taken down, Trenin threw an extra punch at hhim, striking Forbort in what appeared to be the temple area. He laid on the ice holding his face for an extended period of time while Trenin mouthed off to the referees before being kicked out of the game.

“There is a code. But, you know, unfortunately, it didn’t happen,” Tocchet added when asked about the unspoken code of fighting within the NHL — that you don’t hit a player when they’re already down.

After the game last night, a few players spoke on the extra punch. Hughes referred to Trenin’s outburst as a “circus act,” while Marcus Pettersson characterized it as “one of the dirtiest things [he’s] ever seen.”

Today, it was announced that Trenin would not be getting any supplementary discipline for the extra hit. Tocchet noted that hearing this news was “tough to swallow,” regardless of which team it was on.

“You don’t want one of my players, or even when I played a guy, to break his orbital bone, and it’s very unfortunate.

“It’s a tough loss for us. You don’t want a guy like that starting the summer like that. He’s a big part of our team,” Tocchet added of what Forbort’s absence means to the team.

Forbort, who has played a solid third-pairing role for the Canucks this season, is on an expiring contract. Unless Vancouver extends his contract in the next couple of months, he’ll be a free agent once July 1 hits.
