Campbell women rally to win WNIT opener
Campbell completed an eight-point fourth quarter comeback to knock off Coastal Carolina 57-55 in the first round of the Women’s National Invitational Tournament Thursday night at the HTC Center.
Trailing by as many as 11 in the second half, Campbell (22-12) took its first lead of the game on a three from Courtney Dahlquist with 5:14 remaining. Coastal Carolina (23-9) pulled back ahead and led by four with 2:25 left before being held scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Gianni Boone, who hadn’t attempted a three since Jan. 17, connected from behind the arc on a corner trey in front of the Camels bench. Gemma Nunez made a pair of free throws with 46 seconds left to put the Camels ahead by one. Nunez came up with a steal on the next possession, leading to Hadleigh Dill making 1-of-2 free throws with 32 seconds left to put CU up by two.
Coastal’s Alancia Ramsey had a shot to tie the game at the end but hit off the front of the rim and out as time expired.
Campbell picked up the first WNIT win in program history and just the third postseason tournament win overall after defeating both Coastal Carolina and Tennessee Tech in the WBI tourney in 2019.
Dahlquist scored all 12 of her team-high points in the second half, including eight in the fourth quarter. Hadleigh Dill added 10 points while both Boone and Jasmine Felton finished with nine points.
Nunez, who broke the program’s single-season assist record of 206 on the first Campbell bucket of the night, finished with five assists, three steals and a team-high nine boards.
Savannah Brooks along with Ramsey led the Chanticleers with 10 points each.
Campbell held a Coastal Carolina offense that entered the game ranked 43rd nationally averaging 75.0 points per game to its second-lowest output on the season.
After scoring 19 points on 16.1% (5-of-31) shooting in the first half, Campbell went on to score 38 points on 46.6% (14-of-30) shooting across the final two quarters. The Camels finished shooting 31.1% (19-of-61) overall, 26.7% (8-of-30) from three, and made 11-of-12 free throws.
The Chants made 41.4% (24-of-58) of its shots overall, 11.1% (2-of-18) from three and went 5-of-12 from the charity stripe.
The Cardiac Camels now have five come-from-behind wins when trailing by five or more points entering the fourth quarter.
The Camels advance to the second round of the WNIT and travel to play Southern Indiana (22-12) Sunday at 7 p.m. The Screaming Eagles earned a first round bye for the WNIT after falling to Tennessee Tech in the OVC tournament final on Mar. 7.
