Caldwell 'got the team wrong' in Stockport loss

Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell says he takes responsibility for his side's drab 2-0 loss at home to Stockport County.

The Grecians managed just two first-half shots on target as they remain 16th in League One and nine points clear of the relegation zone.

Caldwell was forced to watch the game form the stands after being given a two-match touchline ban having been sent from the dugout during the 0-0 draw at Lincoln City last month.

"I accept responsibility. I got the team wrong," Caldwell told BBC Radio Devon.

"The team we were debating and I think I got that wrong, so I accept my part in that, but too many players have to do more.

"When you're asked to play in a football game the very least we expect is competing, is running, is fighting and we were far too easy to play against.

"Not just without the ball, but even with the ball we had no threat, we had no runs, we had no desire to play forward and run forward and it became a very boring second half if I'm being honest."

Exeter's cause was not helped as they lost half-time substitute Pat Jones to injury 10 minutes after the break and central defender Ed Turns suffered a facial gash with 25 minutes left.

But the Grecians failed to produce a shot on target in the second half as they were unable to back up a good away win at Barnsley in midweek after losing at home to high-flying Wrexham.

"We're better than that. We've shown that many times," Caldwell added.

"Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday is difficult in terms of energy, it was a warm day, but we just didn't turn up today at any point in the game.

"We gifted them a two goal start and it's going to be very difficult against a team that's pushing for promotion.

"We tried to make changes throughout the game and they kind of went against us with Pat coming off and Ed Turns coming off, but nowhere near good enough and we have to get better.

"We have to recover from it, I think we did it extremely well last week after Wrexham and we're going to have to do the same again for Tuesday."
