Browns owner Jimmy Haslam all but closes the door on Deshaun Watson era

The Cleveland Browns are ending their marriage with quarterback Deshaun Watson after three abysmal seasons.

Owner Jimmy Haslam, at the NFL Owners Meeting, gave some damning comments on the quarterback the Browns traded three first round picks for and committed $230 million to. While Watson is still on the roster, and likely will be for financial reasons after restructuring his deal again, his time as the starting quarterback of the Browns is done.

Here is what Haslam had to say on Watson:

“We took a big swing and miss with Deshaun. We thought we had the quarterback, we didn't and we gave up a lot of draft picks to get him. So we've got to dig ourselves out of that hole. (It) was an entire organization decision and it ends with Dee and I, so hold us accountable.”

Watson is currently recovering from re-tearing the same achilles that ended his season in 2024. He is likely to spend the 2025 season on the Physically Unable to Perform list as the Browns will recoup almost his entire contract onto their 2026 cap due to an insurance policy the team took out when committing the money to the former first round pick.

The Browns have already traded for Kenny Pickett this offseason and are far from done overhauling their quarterback room. With the 2025 NFL draft right around the corner, the Browns still have work to do.
