Aaliyah Chavez wins girls McDonald's All-American 3-point contest

The Oklahoma women's basketball season did not end the way the Sooners would have preferred when Connecticut dropped OU in the Sweet 16 round last week, 82-59. Paige Bueckers had an all-time great performance in the second half to lead the Huskies.

More help is on the way.

Aaliyah Chavez, who committed to play for coach Jennie Baranczyk and the Sooners last week as the No. 1 high school recruit in the country, added to her trophy collection Monday. Chavez won the girls' McDonald's All-American 3-point contest. Later, she was bested, barely, by the boys winner, Mekel Brown Jr., who is committed to Louisville.

Chavez scored 18 and won the girls competition, lifting her into the final. Brown shot first and scored 28. Chavez started slow but made five straight money-ball shots to start the comeback. She finished with 25 points.

Chavez won Gatorade Player of the Year honors in March and led Montrety High in Lubbock, Texas to a state championship. She averaged 35.3 points per game and finished her career with 4,796 points, 1,279 rebounds and 771 assists for her high-school career.

Oklahoma is expected to return Honorable Mention All-American Raegan Beers and second-team All-SEC guard Peyton Verhulst. The Sooners finished the year 27-8, the most wins recorded by the program since 2010. That was the year OU last made the women's Final Four, and this year's Sweet 16 marked a tie for the deepest run since, matching the 2013 team.
