Browns: Haslams lambast City of Cleveland in new stadium statement
Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam offered fans a carrot and a stick regarding their new stadium.
The Browns have set their sights on the Brook Park stadium and they’re determined nothing will get in their way. The Browns released new renderings of their proposed stadium and surrounding hotel, and shopping complex. The Browns published a letter to the fans about their plan for Huntington Bank Field in Brook Park.
The team also rebuked Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb for attempting to enforce the Modell Law to keep the team within the city limits. In an amended lawsuit, the Haslams claim the "City seeks to hold the Browns hostage to its own failure of vision" and asks that the expiration of the team's lease in 2028 not trigger "Modell Law."
Mayor Bibb wants the Browns to stay in Cleveland as they funnel a lot of money into the city every year. Bibb is in the middle of a re-election campaign and is turning the Browns into a political football. Bibb opposes the move citing the Modell Law which forces professional franchises to finish their leases before moving. However, the Browns lease will expire before the Brook Park stadium is built. The Haslam family have found political allies within the state.
The Ohio legislator will likely approve $600 million in bonds to help fund the $2.4 billion park. The Haslam family are committed to their hyperreality park in Brook Park. Their statements today reflect their plans to build a new stadium for the team.
