Architects promise to preserve Old Trafford’s history in new stadium
The architects behind Manchester United’s new stadium have pledged to honour Old Trafford’s rich history.
Last week, United confirmed plans to build a new 100,000-seater stadium rather than refurbish the existing ground. Patrick Campbell of Foster + Partners revealed that their directive from Sir Jim Ratcliffe was to create “the finest football stadium in the world,” focusing on atmosphere, fan experience, and pitch proximity.
The new stadium will be built west of the current site, allowing United to continue playing at Old Trafford until completion. Campbell emphasised that the design will maintain key historical elements, ensuring a natural evolution rather than a complete departure.
Discussions with fans and community groups will help determine which heritage aspects to incorporate. The iconic Munich clock and Trinity statue will be central to the project, with Campbell stating their preservation is “non-negotiable.”
The architects are committed to making the new ground a true “football-first” stadium, with no retractable pitch to maintain the highest grass quality.
