Cumberland freshman sprinter Mustapha Bokpin repeated as the NAIA Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week, the national office announced Wednesday. Bokpin earned the honor for the second time during outdoor season and third time overall following a standout performance at the Tennessee Invitational in Knoxville where he competed against a competitive NCAA Division I field.
The Ghana native clocked a blistering 10.13 seconds in the 100-meter dash on Friday, placing fifth out of 46 runners. The time stands as the fastest 100m mark in the NAIA this season and easily meets the NAIA “A” qualifying standard.
He returned to the track on Saturday to post a 20.72 in the 200-meter dash, also finishing fifth in a field of 52. Although he recorded a faster time earlier this year, the mark still ranks fifth on the NAIA performance list and also meets the “A” standard.
Bokpin, who has now been named the Mid-South Conference Men’s Track Athlete of the Week three times during the outdoor season, continues to make his place among the nation’s top sprinters in his debut collegiate campaign. This is the 11th time Phoenix student-athlete has earned NAIA National Athlete of the Week honors this season.
Cumberland is scheduled to compete this weekend at the Lee University Invitational in Cleveland.
