Apr. 10—JAMESTOWN — Julia was feeling pretty good as she left Charlotte and Gordon Hansen Stadium on Thursday.
After all, it was 54 degrees, the sun was shining and she had just picked up a pair of top finishes at the first outdoor track meet of her senior year.
Skari helped the Blue Jay girls track and field team to a 70-22 win over Edgeley/Kulm. The Blue Jay boys also picked up a team win with 42 points. Skari and the Blue Jay girls will be back in action on Tuesday at the Bismarck Community Bowl. The Blue Jay boys will compete on April 17 in Mandan.
Skari, a multi-time state placer in the 100 and 300 hurdles clocked season best times of 15.93 and 48,13 seconds her respective races. The senior won both events.
"Some of the veteran athletes had some good performances," JHS Co-head track and field coach Ken Gardner said. "I talked to Julia Skari after some of her races and she seems pretty excited for where she is at."
Skari wasn't the only one putting up points for the Blue Jay girls.
Addison Marker picked up first-place honors in shot put with a mark of 33 feet, 10.5 inches. Mea Ulland was the 400 meter dash champion with a time of 1:10.37. Sophomore, Layna Hoffer, was the champ in high jump and pole vault.
With running the meet, Gardner didn't have a lot of time to watch his athletes compete but he did get to share a few words with some seniors on the boys team.
"I talked to Brady Harty and it wasn't the race he wanted but it was still pretty good," Gardner said. "That is a good place to be — know you had a good race and know that you can do better."
Harty, also a senior for the Jays, finished first in the 300 hurdles, clocking a time of 43.33 seconds. The senior also placed fourth in the 200 and was the runner-up in long jump, notching a mark of 20 feet, 4 inches.
While Harty was performing on the track, Cody Berreth and Jacoby Traut were taking care of business in the throws. Berreth won the shot put and discus contests picking up marks of 44-06 and 134-01 respectively. Traut was crowned Thursday's javelin champion with a throw of 149 feet, 8 inches.
In high jump, Peacemaker Tumukunde cleared the bar at 5-08 to win the event.
"We were hoping to have a few more teams coming but they had some conflicts," Gardner said. "It's OK to start out a little small. I think some of the veteran athletes would have liked to have a little bit bigger meet to come out of the gates but for some of those younger ones, it's nice to ease into it a little bit.
"They ran hard, set the bar for the outdoor season and now we can build on that," he said.
