Jack Gaughan shares major update on Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City future and upcoming transfer dealings
A new update on Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City future and the club’s upcoming transfer businesshas been shared by Mail Online journalist Jack Gaughan this week.
City kicked off a new era by signing the quartet of Abdukodir Khusanov, Omar Marmoush, Vitor Reis and Nico Gonzalez for £181.5 million to fill several emergence voids in an injury-riddled, ageing squad in January.
A number of first-team stars – such as Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish, Kyle Walker and Ederson – are likely to leave the club at the end of the season – as Manchester City clear much of the deadwood in their current ranks and recruit fresh to challenge on all fronts next term.
The reigning Premier League champions, currently sitting in fifth place in the Premier League, are fighting for UEFA Champions League qualification with nine league games to go.
City exited the Champions League in the Round of 16 stage for the first time since 2017 when they were beaten 6-2 on aggregate over two legs by holders Real Madrid in February.
Hugo Viana will take over from Txiki Begiristain as the club’s sporting director in the summer and after making a series of lucrative sales in the last 24 months, City are expected to build on their January outlay and be active in the summer transfer window.
Guardiola signed a fresh two-year deal in November that will keep him at the club till the summer of 2027 – giving him the platform to invest in the transfer market and build a newlook, hungry Manchester City side because his current crop of players have plateaued
Mail Sport journalist Jack Gaughan has this week revealed that the worse that Manchester City’s season – which could still see the club fail to secure Champions League football next term – gets, the more likely it is that Guardiola will intend to stay on as manager and get the Blues back challenging.
Gaughan has also revealed that Manchester City were considering the purchase of a goalkeeper in January after disappointing seasons for both Ederson and Stefan Ortega Moreno – both of whom could leave this summer.
It has further been doubled down that City’s transfer activity will largely hinge on the sales of some major first-team players, with the club interested in signing Juventus full-back Andrea Cambiaso to replace Kyle Walker, who will almost certainly leave on a permanent basis at the end of his loan at AC Milan.
