Bengals praised for avoiding costly blunder with key star
So far, the Cincinnati Bengals haven't blinked on the Trey Hendrickson trade topic.
While the Bengals technically granted Hendrickson and his reps permission to seek a trade, reports have started to indicate that the trade market has mostly dried up.
Not dealing Hendrickson away has now been named one of the smartest offseason decisions in the NFL, courtesy of Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport:
"The Bengals finished last season ranked 25th in both yards and points allowed. As they try to rebound from a down 2024 campaign, the last thing they need to do is jettison their best player on defense."
While Hendrickson and his reps explored the market (and the star defensive end repeatedly told onlookers that he doesn't want to leave the Bengals), Cincinnati got the contract extensions with Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins done and can now move on to his deal.
The Bengals appear to hold some leverage, otherwise. The hangup on a trade would appear to be Cincinnati's asking price, plus the fact Hendrickson's new team would need to pay him a huge contract extension. Now in his 30s, he's not a likely threat to perform the rare in-season sit out, or hold out for very long, either.
As has always been the case, a Hendrickson trade remains extremely unlikely. With the market apparently set by other teams that were interested in a trade, an extension seems more probable at this point. Not losing the reigning NFL sack leader is indeed something that should earn the Bengals praise right about now.
