Bengals, Trey Hendrickson contract extension rumors keep flying
The Cincinnati Bengals have been eyeing a contract extension for Trey Hendrickson after the monster deals for Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.
Monday, a day removed from reports that the Bengals and Hendrickson had re-engaged in contract talks, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported that the "uptick" in talks occurred last week.
Fowler noted that while there is trade interest from other teams, the Bengals don't have an interest in that avenue and that some problems with an extension persist: "This will inevitably be a 'new money' issue. Currently owed $16M in 2025, so even if Cincy offers 2/60, that makes 3/76. This dynamic is a factor here."
The Bengals cleared some cap space of a yet-unknown amount for 2025 by doing the Higgins and Chase deals, but how they roll that into a fair bit of compensation for Hendrickson on an extension remains to be seen.
They can afford to do it, but the hesitation likely stems from guarantees beyond this season for a player who turns 31 in December. Hendrickson is surely in that $30 million average per year bracket right now, but the structure of payouts is likely a delaying factor, as it was with the wideouts.
As other reports have pointed out, Hendrickson's trade market has been reduced in size as free agency continues. The leverage isn't as cut and dry as say, the clever leverage Chase and Higgins' agent held over the front office. But both sides surely feel they have enough to drag this thing out.
