Pro Football Focus lays out worst-case scenario for Chargers in 2025 NFL draft
The Chargers have a few needs to address in the upcoming draft, even after making a slew of acquisitions in free agency. Among them is adding a stud wide receiver, which Pro Football Focus believes will be Los Angeles' "biggest mistake" if they fail to do so.
Yes, Mike Williams is returning to the Chargers, but he didn’t play anywhere close to the level we’re accustomed to last year (59.7 PFF receiving grade). Los Angeles currently fields only one wideout above a 68.0 PFF receiving grade, and it’s on the inside (Ladd McConkey). Not finding a real perimeter weapon for Justin Herbert by the end of Round 2 would be a head-scratching move, because it’s something the Chargers sorely missed last year.
Despite bringing back Mike Williams, he didn't play to the level he did when he was with the Chargers, as he was working his way back from a knee injury he sustained in 2023. Williams is also only on a one-year deal.
The Chargers got excellent production from Ladd McConkey in his rookie season, but he's primary lined up in the slot. Quentin Johnston led the group in touchdowns this past season but struggled with dropped passes. Joshua Palmer is now with the Bills.
This positional room would benefit from a true vertical threat. They could find that in Round 1 with Texas' Matthew Golden or Ohio State's Emeka Egbuka. On Day 2, Iowa State's Jayden Higgins, Ole Miss' Tre Harris, Utah State's Jalen Royals and Stanford's Elic Ayomanor are other intriguing options.
If the Chargers want to maximize Justin Herbert's potential, they must surround him with a solid support cast, including reliable receivers.
