Packers GM Brian Gutekunst attends Alabama Pro Day
A day after attending the Oregon Ducks Pro Day, Brian Gutekunst, the Green Bay Packers general manager, and Jon-Eric Sullivan, the VP of Player Personnel headed south for the Alabama Crimson Tide Pro Day. One of Green Bay's college scouts, Luke Benuska was also in attendance, as noted by Matt Schneidman of The Athletic.
The Crimson Tide had 11 players take part in their pro day, with three of those players being specialists. Jihaad Campbell, Tyler Booker and Jalen Milroe are the headliners this draft cycle for the Crimson Tide. Campbell and Booker both figure to go in the Top 40 and Milroe could go anywhere from the first round to the fourth round.
During the past two drafts, the Crimson Tide have had 20 players get drafted with six of them being first-round picks. Alabama likely won't reach double digits for a third straight year. Instead the number will likely be around seven, like it was in 2022.
Since taking over as general manager in 2018, Gutekunst has drafted only one player out of Alabama. That player was punter JK Scott. Gutekunst drafted Scott in the fifth round with the 172 overall pick.
Is there an Alabama prospect that Gutekunst could target in the 2025 NFL Draft? Let's look at some potential fits and who Gutekunst got a close look at on Wednesday.
Shocker at 23?
Campbell is a Top 25 player in this class. The Alabama linebacker is an impressive athlete and has sideline-to-sideline range. He was extremely disruptive this past season for the Crimson Tide. He recorded 11.5 tackles for loss, five sacks, 20 pressures and 65 run stops. He was all over the field.
With Edgerrin Cooper and Quay Walker already on the roster, it's hard to imagine Gutekunst using a first-round pick on a linebacker, especially when he invested a pair of Day 2 picks on the position a year ago.
However, if Campbell is still on the board when the Packers are on the clock with the 23rd overall pick, he will likely be the best player available. If the Packers don't pick up Walker's fifth-year option, they could take Campbell at 23. A pairing of Campbell and Cooper would cause a lot of problems for opposing teams.
Booker would be another surprise at 23. Booker is the best true guard in the draft. After signing Aaron Banks in free agency, it's hard to picture a world where the Packers take a guard in the first round.
TE targets on Day 3
CJ Dippre and Robbie Ouzts are a pair of tight ends that could be late Day 3 targets for the Packers as they look to add depth behind Tucker Kraft and Luke Musgrave.
Dippre gets after it as a run blocker. He's a traditional in-line tight end who could help Green Bay's rushing attack. A transfer from Maryland, Dippre caught 32 passes during his two seasons at Alabama. He has reliable hands and has no issue making catches in traffic.
Ouzts is a gritty blocker. He's an H-back all day long. He works hard to stay engaged as a blocker. He takes good angles and does a good job of sealing running lanes. He logged 537 snaps on special teams during his college career and could provide an immediate impact in that department.
Interior DL Depth
The Crimson Tide have had at least one defensive tackle get drafted nine straight years. That streak could potentially be in jeopardy. If the streak is to continue, it will be Tim Smith who keeps it alive.
A former four-star recruit, Smith started 32 games during his time at Alabama. Smith recorded four tackles for loss and two sacks this past season.
At 6-4, 302 pounds, Smith has a powerful upper half and can be hard to displace. He can root in against double teams and help keep linebackers clean.
The Packers have a pair of seventh-round picks. Smith could be a target with one of them as they look to bolster their interior depth.
Other players
Malachi Moore is a defensive back who offers a Javon Bullard or Evan Williams-like skill set. He has the versatility to man the slot or play deep. With Bullard and Williams already in the fold, Moore may not be a fit in Green Bay's secondary.
At 243 pounds, Que Robinson is too light for Green Bay's liking. The defensive end finished this past season with seven tackles for loss and four sacks.
