Parsons, Lawrence have Twitter beef over parting shot as Cowboys duo splits in free agency
The gauntlet has been set. The war of words, and maybe more, is on. On Wednesday, longtime self-proclaimed defensive leader of the Dallas Cowboys, DeMarcus Lawrence left the only pro team he's ever known to sign with the Seattle Seahawks. The money was good, real good, checking in with a three-year deal worth up to $42 million. Lawrence, who's made over $127 million during his Cowboys career, was heading to reunite with Aden Durde, former DL coach in Dallas and currently defensive coordinator in Seattle.
The Cowboys, moving from Mike McCarthy to first-time head coach Brian Schottenheimer, have now let their two most tenured defensive leaders leave in free agency. With Jourdan Lewis now in Jacksonville on a three-year, $30 million deal, the defense is undoubtedly in Micah Parsons' hands now.
One never knows what goes in in a locker room, whether two star players truly like each other or just work together. One also, at least for now, doesn't know whether or not the Cowboys made a concerted effort to retain Lawrence this offseason. What we do know, is that Lawrence chose to publicly denegrate the Cowboys organization, and Parsons has now publicly taken offense, initiating a social media battle between the two.
Things started early on Thursday evening, when a 20-second snippet of an interview Lawrence gave to Seahawks blogger Brian Nemhauser, @hawkblogger on Twitter. Lawrence proclaimed that while he loves Dallas and still calls it home, he "knew" he'd never win a title there.
“Dallas is my home… But I know for sure I’m not gonna win a Super Bowl there” 😭 pic.twitter.com/F31fVSZLC4

Parsons, who took over the title of the Cowboys' best defender from Lawrence when he joined the team in 2021, responded on Twitter. Parsons claimed that Lawrence's quote should be attributed to being bitter that Dallas didn't give him an offer that would've made him stay in town. He called the parting shot clown-level activity.
This what rejection and envy look like! This some clown shit! 🤡 https://t.co/pTLAuuW2YH

It took a little time, but eventualy Lawrence responded to Parsons' response. The man who made $127 million and was part of every playoff failure since 2014 himself, stood ten toes down on his proclamation. He added that part of the reason he didn't stay was because the team's best defender was too worried about being on social media, indicating he thought Parsons would be even better if he focused more on football.
Calling me a clown won’t change the fact that I told the truth. Maybe if you spent less time tweeting and more time winning, I wouldn’t have left.😈

The two teams are not scheduled to meet during the 2025 regular season, but there's probably going to be an additional word or two shared. It's unlikely Parsons allows Lawrence to get the last word here.
Also, it's interesting to note that not but a few hours after Lawrence signed with Seattle, Parsons tweeted out "It's my time," and then retweeted Cowboys' content creator Tom Downey who interpreted the tweet to be about Parsons getting a shot to be the defense's leader.
Wouldn't read this as contract related.

But would as leadership related https://t.co/biMtoi1i0P
