Highlights

Old Bridge 12, East Brunswick 2: The Knights showed why they opened the season as the Home News Tribune’s No. 1 Greater Middlesex Conference team. Their ingredients: top-flight pitching and hitting throughout the lineup. That was on display in Tuesday’s win at Fred Cole Field.

Senior righty Justin Hascup threw a two-hitter in the full six innings and allowed two runs (one earned) with nine strikeouts and a walk. East Brunswick jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on Joe Spinello’s two-run shot. Old Bridge responded by plating four runs in the fourth to take the lead and closed with four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Leadoff hitter Jared Volpe set the stage with a 2-for-4 day with two RBIs and two runs scored and No. 9 hitter Brody Nugent went 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored. In between, the rest of the guys did pretty good, as well. Hitting second to cleanup, John Smith had two hits with a double, an RBI and scored twice, Akhil Penkala was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a double and Erich Schikschenet went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. No. 8 hitter Matt Chin was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a double and scored twice. He also got hit by a pitch. Noah Balbuena (run) and Anthony Jannucci (triple, RBI) added hits in the win.

Brandon Bastek got the other hit for East Brunswick (0-1).

North Brunswick 3, Sayreville 2: The Raiders have a lineup of mostly varsity newcomers. Tuesday, one of their veterans came thru as North Brunswick picked up a key GMC White Division win.
