Barcelona midfielder braced for financial compromise in tense contract negotiations
As the final phase of the campaign approaches, Barcelona’s efforts to secure a contract renewal for Frenkie de Jong have gained momentum.
The Dutch midfielder, who struggled early in the season with an ankle injury, has since regained his form, becoming a key starter under Hansi Flick.
The club’s sporting department is delighted with his recent contributions, prompting discussions with his agent, Ali Dursun, about extending his stay.
Barcelona have given Flick the autonomy
A recent report from Mundo Deportivo has offered a comprehensive update on de Jong’s contract situation at Barcelona.
The report lays out how the club has given Hansi Flick the autonomy to decide the fate of de Jong, as to whether or not Barça should hand him a renewal offer.
Flick, though, faces a complex evaluation. He must weigh de Jong’s role against emerging talents like Gavi, whose position in the squad could be influenced by this outcome.
Nevertheless, it is clear that the club is serious about extending the contract of the Dutchman, who is reportedly keen on continuing his spell in Catalonia.
While not many details are available regarding the potential terms of the deal, the report indicates that de Jong might not earn the same salary as before in the new deal.
As things stand, de Jong is currently among the highest earners in La Liga – something that has ailed Barcelona as far as managing an inflated wage bill is concerned.
For now, Barcelona are keen to shield Flick from distractions and have urged him to prioritize the sporting side. The club believe the ideal moment for renewal talks will come after the season ends.
