Financial details of Barcelona’s offer to Frenkie de Jong including crucial release clause
Barcelona remain focused on renewing Frenkie de Jong’s contract, but they are looking to implement significant changes to his salary structure.
According to an update from SPORT, the club wants to secure the Dutchman’s future while adapting to their ongoing financial constraints.
Currently, De Jong earns €19 million per season, with his contract set to expire next year. Under Hansi Flick, he has been a key figure in the squad, making him a priority for renewal.
However, due to Barcelona’s delicate financial situation, they have restructured their offer to fit within their revised wage scale.
Financial changes
After a long period without negotiations, the club recently made a final proposal to De Jong. The offer includes keeping his overall earnings the same but modifying the salary structure.
Instead of a high fixed salary, the new contract would see a lower guaranteed wage, with performance-related bonuses making up the difference.
This means that while De Jong could still earn his current salary, it would depend on meeting specific objectives set by the club.
Another major aspect of the proposed deal is the elimination of deferred payments. These were initially agreed upon under Josep Maria Bartomeu’s presidency during the pandemic, and Barcelona are keen to remove them.
No response yet
So far, the Dutch midfielder has not responded to the offer, but reports from The Athletic suggest that discussions between both parties are ongoing.
At 27, this could be his last opportunity to secure a major contract, making the negotiations even more crucial.
A key feature of Barcelona’s proposal is the inclusion of an €80 million release clause. Given De Jong’s current level of performance, this figure is considered manageable for potential suitors in the future.
If he ever decides to leave, this clause would provide flexibility while ensuring the club does not lose him for a cut-price deal.
Despite repeated declarations of his desire to stay at Barcelona, De Jong’s consistent performances have kept him on the radar of top European clubs.
A contract renewal with this structured clause would give both the player and the club some security. Now, all eyes are on De Jong’s decision, which could shape the club’s midfield for years to come.
