Say what you will about the clichéd intellectual acumen of surfers — or lack thereof, hence the Spicoli stereotype — but surfers can be quite creative when it comes to aptly naming waves.
Take, for instance, a few marquee examples: Pipeline (big, hollow, cylinders), Old Man’s (slow, gentle, borderline geriatric), or Jaws (snarling, razor sharp, carnivorous)…just to name a few.
Which brings us to Deadman’s, a spot just outside of Sydney, Australia, which recently lived up to its name by serving up some seriously lethal, questionably even surfable waves during a heavy run of swell that slammed the New South Wales region. Take a peek (and a cringe) below.
“Deadman’s was pumping, and the crew was ON,” wrote the Manly Surf TV crew about the session from April 1st. “Huge slabs, heavy wipeouts, and some seriously committed surfers and bodyboarders taking on one of Sydney’s gnarliest waves. Raw footage of the chaos, the drops, and the carnage.”
Then, making the rounds on social media, was a ride from Max McGuigan. Perhaps one of the most horrific, yet also cinematic, dismounts of all time. Check it out below:
