Auburn WR coach Marcus Davis praises Malcolm Simmons as spring practice continues

A pair of young Auburn receivers splashed onto the scene last season and are now on pace to take a giant leap forward in development as spring practice continues on the Plains.

Last season, true freshmen Cam Coleman and Malcolm Simmons finished No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, in receiving yards by combining to haul in 77 passes for 1,049 yards and 11 touchdowns. Simmons led the duo in catches with 40 while Coleman headed up the receiving yards with 598 and touchdowns with eight.

Simmons' production was surprising considering he was the lowest-rated receiver between the "Big Three" of Coleman and Perry Thompson in the 247Sports 2024 recruiting rankings. This season, expect him to make a giant splash says Auburn wide receiver's coach Marcus Davis. Davis provided keys for Simmons' 2025 success during a recent media availability.

"Just continue to do the little things and just be a disciplined football player," Davis said of Simmons. "He's God-gifted. He's talented. You can be that way, but you also need the discipline of the game so you can be a complete receiver. He has been responding awesome."

Auburn's receiver group will be just as talented as last season's. Simmons, Coleman, and Thompson return while Eric Singleton, the No. 1 wide receiver from the transfer portal, and former Wake Forest wideout Horatio Fields join the unit to provide experience. Davis says he notices a difference in the development of his rising sophomores by the way they soak up information.

"I'm excited about the guys because I see them growing up right before my eyes. They're not just nodding their heads when I'm communicating with them, there's actually substance behind it now," Davis said. "I feel really good about guys like Malcolm (Simmons) and him taking that next step."

Simmons, Coleman, and the rest of the Auburn wide receivers will continue to prepare for April 12's A-Day game that will take place at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Check out Auburn Wire's full spring wide receiver preview ahead of A-Day.
