Army can't complete another heroic comeback, fall at Rutgers in WNIT second round
Army staged a furious comeback for the second game in a row but could not survive a final push by homestanding Rutgers and bowed in the second round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament 71-60 on Sunday in Piscataway, N.J.
The setback puts an end to an historic season by the Black Knights (25-8). Army was runner-up in the Patriot League tournament, and posted its first NCAA Div. I postseason win three days earlier with a huge comeback win at Bryant. Its 25 victories is No. 2 all-time for the Black Knights.
Like Thursday, Army fell behind 40-22 in the second quarter but used a 20-6 scoring run to pull to within 52-47 after three. Army closed within 58-56 with 5:42 remaining only to see Rutgers run off the next nine points.
Camryn Tade posted 13 points and eight rebounds, Fiona Hastick 12 points, four assists and three steals and Kya Smith 11 points, five rebounds and three steals. Sam Tillson scored eight off the bench and starters Trinity Hardy and Reese Ericson were held far under their averages, each scoring six.
Rutgers (12-19) advances to the round of 16. The Scarlet Knights shot 49 percent, hit five of 15 threes and 14 of 18 free throws. Rutgers outscored Army 36-20 in the paint and 18-8 on fast breaks. JoJo Lacey scored 17 points, Zachara Perkins and Awa Sidibe 13 apiece and Destiny Adams 12.
