According to journalist Miguel Angel Diaz, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti is seriously considering deploying David Alaba at left-back for their upcoming UEFA Champions League clash against Arsenal.
However, it must be noted that the move, while not entirely unconventional in recent years, is not without precedent.
Alaba, who spent much of his early career as a left-back at Bayern Munich, has all the attributes required for the role—pace, technical quality, and an excellent understanding of positional play.
While he has primarily operated as a centre-back during his time at Madrid, the Austrian’s versatility has always been one of his strongest traits.
Solution amidst crisis
This consideration comes at a time when Ancelotti is facing a minor crisis in that position. Ferland Mendy is unavailable, and youngster Fran Garcia has yet to convince the coaching staff that he is ready for a high-stakes European fixture.
In light of these limitations, turning to a seasoned international like Alaba appears to be a logical solution—particularly in a match where experience and composure will be key.
In Real Madrid’s recent La Liga loss to Valencia, Alaba, whose future is under scrutiny, was tested at left-back for a few minutes, and while his attacking contributions were evident, some defensive lapses raised questions.
Even so, Ancelotti seems willing to take the risk, understanding that Madrid’s attacking fluidity could be enhanced with Alaba offering width and support from the flank.
Is it worth trying?
The decision takes on added significance following the club’s disappointing result against Valencia.
The La Liga title now looks increasingly out of reach, placing even greater emphasis on the Champions League as Madrid’s most viable path to silverware.
Ancelotti, well aware of the stakes, is planning every detail, and it remains to be seen whether Alaba will be given the nod from the start.
For now, one thing is clear: Real Madrid, no matter the setbacks, will continue to rely on their Champions League pedigree.
