Amarillo Sod Poodles announce opening day roster featuring top prospects, key returnees

Baseball season is finally here for the Amarillo Sod Poodles, who will kick off their 2025 campaign in San Antonio against the Missions on Friday.

The Sod Poodles are coming off of a 58-79 record in 2024 and are looking to improve this season behind a new coaching staff and a strong roster that was revealed on Friday.

The team has a strong balance of returnees infused with intriguing newcomers, as 15 players come back for another season at Hodgetown and six players who are top prospects in the Arizona Diamondbacks system, according to MLB Pipeline. Being an affiliate of the Diamondbacks, there is a chance that a few of the players currently on Amarillo's roster will be making plays in the big leagues in the next few years.

Infielders Tommy Troy and LuJames Groover, as well as outfielder Gavin Conticello are a few of the team's most high-profile prospects, and seem to have the best chance at making an impact in the MLB. On the mound, the Sod Poodles roster top prospects Roman Angelo, Spencer Giesting and Dylan Ray.

Giesting and Ray both pitched for the Sod Poodles last season, as well.

Aside from the big-name players on the roster, Amarillo has 11 players who return from the team's 2024 squad. Luke Albright, Jhosmer Alvarez, Alec Baker, Zach Barnes, Gerardo Gutierrez, Christian Cerda, Jose Fernandez, Jesus Valdez, Jean Walters, Andy Weber, Caleb Roberts and Kristian Robinson were all in the Texas Panhandle last season, and will start the 2025 campaign at Hodgetown once again.

Following the Sod Poodles' three-game series against the Missions, the team returns to Amarillo for its home opener against the Springfield Cardinals at 7:05 p.m. on April 8. The contest is the first of ...
