49ers prioritize keeping franchise QB upright in new Mel Kiper draft predictions
There's no messing around for the San Francisco 49ers in a new mock draft from ESPN's Mel Kiper.
After last season's 6-11 finish, the trenches are the clear-cut area the 49ers need to upgrade via the NFL draft. Whether someone wants to rank the offensive line or defensive line first is a matter of preference. For the 49ers it may come down to what players are available once they're on the clock at No. 11 overall.
Kiper's mock makes it a relatively easy choice for the 49ers. University of Missouri offensive tackle Armand Membou is on the board when San Francisco selects, and he may be the perfect blend of value and need for a team that could use a new OT.
Membou was mostly a right tackle for the Tigers, and he shined at that spot despite not carrying elite measurables. However, he put together a really nice NFL combine performance that showed off the athleticism he flashed on the field. His arms also measured at 33.5 inches, which clears the typical benchmark most teams set for arm length of their offensive tackles.
There are question marks with some of the other top OT prospects in this year's class. Membou appears ready to step in as a starter at right tackle on Day 1. That would allow Colton McKivitz to take on a swing tackle role. It may also allow him to battle for a starting left guard spot.
More importantly for Membou is that he could move over to the left side once Trent Williams retires. If the 49ers can find an upgrade at RT this year and their long-term answer at LT both in one pick they shouldn't hesitate to make that their selection.
