Fetterman says Mark Robinson story is ‘great news’ for Democrats
Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) said Sunday that the allegations against North Carolina Republican gubernatorial nominee Mark Robinson are “great news” for Democrats.
Fetterman joined MSNBC’s “Meet the Press” where he was asked by host Kristen Welker about former President Trump’s endorsement of Robinson and if it’s fair for voters to judge a candidate based on who they endorse.
CNN released a damning report about the sitting lieutenant governor making many offensive statements on a porn site more than 10 years ago.
“Well, of course, but it’s great news for Democrats,” Fetterman said. “I mean, Robinson is actually, he’s the new dream candidate to run against.”
Robinson currently trails his Democratic challenger state Attorney General Josh Stein (D) and the report may make Stein’s lead larger.
North Carolina Republicans are sticking with Robinson amid the allegations, which he’s denied.
Before the report was released, speculation about the article’s contents caused some to wonder if Robinson could pull out of the race, especially since the state is beginning to mail out ballots.
Trump has tried to distance himself but has yet to revoke his endorsement of Robinson. Fetterman said the former president is not going to “walk back” his endorsement because he won’t want to “admit what a disaster” it is.
Fetterman said it’s “nice to know” that the report likely will solidify Stein’s chances of winning and help Vice President Harris’s chances in North Carolina.
“She’s made North Carolina competitive already, and then after Robinson now … we’re in the best possible situation to win,” he said.
