At least 4 killed, several injured in Birmingham mass shooting
At least four people were killed and more were injured in a mass shooting in a popular area of Birmingham, Alabama, on Saturday evening, police said.
The Birmingham Police Department said early Sunday morning its officers were on the scene where “multiple people” were shot and there were possibly “multiple casualties.”
Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald said just after 11 p.m. Saturday evening, multiple shooters fired multiple shots on a “group of people” in the popular Five Points South area, CNN reported.
Two men and one woman were pronounced dead at the scene and one other person died at a local hospital.
Firefighters took eight wounded people to a hospital and other victims brought themselves, AL.com reported.
Police were looking for suspects as of early Sunday.
They said they’re working to determine whether the shooters walked up to the victims or drove by in a vehicle, since all four killed were on the sidewalk. The scene of the crime is in a popular area where people congregate for restaurants and live music.
They are also investigating whether it was “multiple shootings,” since it’s unclear if multiple people opened fire.
“We have dozens of gunshot victims from this area,” Fitzgerald told CNN. “I’m told at least four of those gunshot victims are life-threatening, the others have various injuries.”
Police have reached out to other law enforcement agencies to assist with the investigation.
This is a developing story.
