Civilization 7 - How To Earn More Leader XP And Foundation XP
Sid Meier's Civilization 7 is quite unlike its predecessors. In previous games, you mostly chose a nation with its own leader. Now, you select historical figures and countries separately. Moreover, there's a progression system that rewards you the more you play. Here's our guide on how to get more foundation XP and leader XP in Civilization 7.
How to get more foundation XP and leader XP in Civilization 7
Civilization 7's progression system is account-based. As you continue to play in matches, you earn experience points that unlock cool rewards. These include badges and icons for your profile/banner, as well as Mementos. The Mementos you acquire are actually fairly important, since they grant unique bonuses, such as additional leader attribute points.
What are the differences between foundation level and leader level?
Foundation XP in Civilization 7, also known as the Foundation Path, is akin to your account's overall level. Think of it as a way to track your progress not just in a single match, but throughout the game's lifespan as you continue to play.
Leader XP, as the term implies, is tied to a specific historical figure that you choose at the start of each match. Basically, it's like earning rewards as you level up and "main" a particular character.
Challenges that grant XP can be found in your profile page (i.e. your badge icon at the top-right corner on the main menu). Click your badge, then go to the Challenges tab to see the Foundation and Leader categories.
What affects Foundation XP?
There are a plethora of tasks that affect the Civilization 7 Foundation XP that you earn. Here are some examples:
- Tutorials - There are 16 tasks here to help you learn more about the game's mechanics. These include becoming a city-state suzerain, "packing" several units into a commander, upgrading towns into cities, and more.
- Wonders - These require you to build a Wonder for a matching civ/country. Examples include constructing the Pyramids as Egypt or building the Great Stele as Aksum.
- Civ Victories - Each civ has facets that it excels in. The goal is to complete a Legacy path that coincides with those categories. Examples include completing a Scientific Legacy as the Abbasids or the Cultural Legacy as Greece.
- Milestones - These refer to long-term tallies, such as how many turns you've played, how many Wonders you've built, how many times you've promoted your commanders, and more.
- Accomplishments - Think of these as achievements. These are still akin to milestones, except they tend to be very specific. Here are some examples:
- Reinforce the same commander with units three or more times over the course of a single war.
- Have a city with 37 urban districts.
- Have over 100 population in your empire.
- Become a suzerain of each type of city-state in a single age.
- Settle a town next to a volcano and have it reach 10 population.
What affects Leader XP?
The Civilization 7 Leader XP feature, meanwhile, has general concepts that you can tackle for each character:
- Finish the Antiquity/Exploration/Modern Age Y once/twice/thrice.
- Complete era-specific Legacy Paths once/twice/three times.
- Complete leader-specific narrative events.
Note that these kinds of narrative events are those that (usually) show a character's portrait/model or ones that refer to them by name. Likewise, these quests are era-specific, too, so try to finish them before you transition to the next age.
How to earn more XP in a single match?
Ideally, you should play each campaign run at your leisure, without necessarily focusing too much on what you'll get at the end. However, if you really want to get more Foundation XP and Leader XP in Civilization 7, then here are some tips:
- Each era has four Legacy paths/milestones to tackle: Cultural, Economic, Military, and Science. You're not locked-in to a particular Legacy. You can try various objectives as you progress and even complete multiple milestones.
- As you continue onward, look at the era counter in the top-left corner of your screen--i.e. the percentage value that shows if the era is about to end. At around the 70 to 80% mark, make a backup manual save. This is because the full completion of Legacy paths/milestones adds a huge chunk to the progress meter, causing the age to end abruptly.
- At this point, you can keep going to complete certain Legacy milestones. Here's a good example for the Exploration Age:
- You and your opponent have settlements on another continent--i.e. distant lands.
- You can do the objectives for the Military Legacy (i.e. settle, conquer, or convert settlements in distant lands), Cultural Legacy (i.e. get holy relics from religious conversion), and Economic Legacy (i.e. send Treasure Fleets back to your home continent).
- Let's say the progress gauge is at 90% and you're almost done with the Economic Legacy milestone. Just click on your Treasure Fleet and park them in water tiles near your home continent.
- Next, use your missionaries to convert settlements to your religion, which should, hopefully, net you points for your Military Legacy and Cultural Legacy.
- Once the progress gauge reaches 100%, the next age doesn't start until you end your turn. So, at this point, just unload the wares from the Treasure Fleet ships that you parked earlier. This should complete the Economic Legacy path, too.
- The above method should help you complete all three Legacy challenges for your chosen leader in that particular era, all in one match. However, if the era ends too soon, you can always reload your save to try again. This is better than having to start a whole run from scratch.
