Civilization 7: Best Ways To Get More Gold
From the moment you start Civilization VII, you have to worry about acquiring more gold. It's the main currency you'll spend throughout all three ages and you need it for a plethora of different actions. From purchasing military units in towns to buying buildings that will your settlements stronger, gold is always on your mind.
Luckily, Civilization 7 offers a variety of different ways to make gold, allowing you to expand your treasury faster than you might think. Below, we'll offer several of the best methods to earn gold quickly so you can keep up with your empire's demands.
Engage in Endeavors with Leaders
One of the first ways to make gold that's introduced to you is engaging in specific Endeavors with other world leaders you come across on the map. When you meet a leader, their portrait is added alongside yours in the top-right of the screen. You can click on the portrait to see all the available Endeavors with that leader. For gold purposes, you want to select the "Open Markets" Endeavor, which rewards you and the leader with a set amount of gold every turn.
If the leader "supports" your endeavor, you earn more gold, but it also costs more Influence. On the flip side, you can "support" an Endeavor when a leader approaches you, which also nets you more gold. Another Endeavor you want to consider is "Improve Trade Relations," which opens up additional trade routes to earn more resources that earn gold. But we'll talk about that method in more detail later on in this guide.
Produce specific Buildings
Throughout the course of Civilization VII, you can research technologies and civics that allow you to construct new buildings in your settlements. Sometimes, these buildings offer passive gold every turn after they are built.
Buildings such as the inn, bazaar, port, rail station, and others give the settlement they're in gold every turn, which adds to the overall number in your treasury. You won't be able to build all of these structures from the start of the game, but over time, your settlements can construct them all if you research the right technologies and civics. As such, it's important to view every available technology and civic when you can research a new one to see exactly what they offer.
Allocate Resources
Arguably the most consistent way to earn gold in Civilization VII is by allocating specific resources to your settlements. Some resources offer passive gold for every turn they are allocated to a settlement. You can acquire these resources by building on their tile in a settlement's borders or establishing a trade route with a merchant to another leader's settlement. When a merchant establishes a trade route with another settlement, you get to allocate that settlement's resources to your own.
However, resources from cities can only be allocated to cities, and resources from towns can be allocated anywhere. To see what resources offer gold, just hover over every resource's icon. If you see a "+4" or any other number to gold, you want to prioritize that resource over others.
Use Treasure Fleets
One of the more underrated ways to earn gold is by utilizing Treasure Fleets. Treasure Fleets are special naval ships that you can use to earn 150 gold every time they are offloaded to one of your coastal, homeland settlements. We went over Treasure Fleets in a dedicated guide if you want to read more about them.
The gist of Treasure Fleets is you need to own one of the "Silver" resources in any of your settlements. If you do, then beginning in the Exploration Age, you'll produce a Treasure Fleet every 10 turns. You then need to maneuver that ship to the border of a coastal, homeland settlement. This means any settlement that borders water and is on the continent you started on. Once your ship is within the borders, you can offload it to earn 150 gold. Basically, every 12 or so turns, you can earn an easy 150 gold, and that's just with one Treasure Fleet. If you have more of them, that's even more gold.
Use Social Policies
Another consistent way to make gold is by slotting in specific Social Policies. Every so often during an age in Civilization VII, you'll be able to slot in a new Social Policy. The policies offer bonuses, and sometimes negatives, to your empire's resources. Some of the policies offer a flat rate of gold every turn while others incentivize you to utilize Specialists or other mechanics to earn more gold. You'll unlock new Social Policies to use by researching civics, which can also give you extra Social Policy slots.
Choose Government Styles
At the start of a new age in Civilization VII, you have to pick what kind of government you're going to implement. Most of the time, you'll be able to select a government that focuses on the economy, which in turn offers you extra gold in exchange for giving up something else, such as science or culture. Choosing a government also allows you to select one of two directions to go every 20 or so turns.
One of these directions is usually an increase to gold over the 20 turns, while the other option is increased production. So, if you want as much gold as possible, choose an economic government and always select the gold option when faced with a new direction choice.
Economic Leader Attributes
Finally, the last consistent way to make gold in Civilization VII is by selecting specific Leader Attributes in the Economic section. You unlock Economic Attributes by increasing your treasury and making economic decisions throughout an age. Some of the choices in the Economics section give you extra gold per turn or offer gold in exchange for importing resources, establishing trade routes, having alliances, etc.
This is one of the more lucrative ways to earn gold, but it will take you a while to earn Economic Attributes, even if you take all your Economic Advisor's advice.
