EVANSVILLE — Zac Nero was named the next head football coach at North High School.
The hire was approved during the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corp. board meeting on Monday. Nero, a 2007 graduate of Harrison, has been an assistant coach with the Huskies for 11 seasons. He is now the eighth head coach in program history.
North went 5-6 last year and lost to Castle in the Class 5A sectional championship.
Nero has an extensive athletic background at North. He has been an assistant coach in boys basketball and track & field for the past 12 years, in addition to being a health and physical education teacher at the school since 2020. Nero was a four-year member of the football team at Indiana State before throwing discus at Southern Indiana for one year. He also previously spent two seasons on the football staff at Memorial.
He has a bachelor's degree in sport management from USI and later completed a Transition-to-Teaching program at Oakland City.
Nero was the Huskies' defensive coordinator the past three seasons – those teams allowed only 17.3, 19.2 and 17.3 points per game. North won the 5A sectional championship and finished tied for second in the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference in 2023. The Huskies will be looking to replace multiple starters on both sides of the ball next season. Among the key returners are All-State linebacker Ricky White Jr. and All-SIAC defensive lineman Mike Epps.
Joey Paridaen stepped down in February following seven seasons at North. He is now the head coach at Tecumseh.
