Yet another Brewers starting pitcher hits the injured list early in the season

And then, only one remained.

Another injury has hit the Milwaukee Brewers starting rotation, as Nestor Cortes is headed to the 15-day injured list, leaving Freddy Peralta as the only healthy member of the expected starting staff from the beginning of spring training.

Cortes is dealing with a left elbow flexor strain that both the left-hander and the Brewers are classifying as hopefully a short-term injured list stint.

“This is not a situation where we think it's going to be a long term issue,” assistant general manager Matt Kleine said. “We're still in the process of gathering information. That'll take another few days, but as of right now, this is looking more like a short term issue than a long term issue.”

Cortes said he felt discomfort in his elbow after his first start of the season in New York, but imaging done in the following days looked similar to what was done in the offseason. Cortes threw six shutout innings then last Thursday night but didn’t recover enough to make his next scheduled start coming Wednesday.

Cortes joins starters Aaron Ashby, Aaron Civale, DL Hall, Tobias Myers, Robert Gasser and Brandon Woodruff on the injured list.
