Wrestling: Courier News Area Skyland, GMC and Union 2024-25 All-Area teams
It’s been another exciting season on the mat filled with highlights and great performances. Here are the Courier News 2024-25 All-Area selections.
The area consists of Somerset, Hunterdon and parts of Middlesex (Piscataway, South Plainfield and Middlesex/Dunellen) and Union counties (Governor Livingston, New Providence, Plainfield, Scotch Plains-Fanwood and Westfield).
Wrestlers are slotted based on weights at which they competed in the postseason, meaning the start of the district tournament.

The first criteria is earning a state medal (Top 8). Then, other factors are weighed such as postseason advancement, quality wins and head-to-head matches with each weight decided on a case-by-case basis after evaluating the whole body of work.
There are three teams and an honorable mention.
FIRST TEAM

113 – Owen O`Leary, Ridge, Jr.
31-8, 2nd SCT, 1st District 16, 3rd Region 4

120 – Jack Abramson, Pingry, So.
35-9, 2nd SCT, 2nd District 15, 1st Region 4
Abramson followed up his 26-win freshman season by reaching Atlantic City as a region champ and winning two matches in his first state tournament appearance. He spent most of the year at 126/132, beating a returning state placewinner and wrestling other top guys tough. He dropped to 120 for the postseason and won Region 4 as the No. 3 seed.
126 – Anthony DiAndrea, Watchung Hills, Jr.
39-3, 1st SCT, 1st District 15, 1st Region 4, State 3rd
DiAndrea continues to get better and earned his third state medal after placing seventh and fifth. He took third as the No. 6 seed with wins over the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 seeds. The junior’s marquee wins included three victories over Delaware Valley’s Jaden Perez, a two-time state medalist. DiAndrea also won a Sam Cali Battle for the Belt title.
132 – Aidan Yarussi, North Hunterdon, So.
38-7, 2nd H/W/S/T, 1st District 14, 2nd Region 4, Top 12 State
Yarussi exploded on the varsity with a 30-13 freshman season and reached the state tournament with a win in AC. He continued his upswing by capturing his first district title and going 3-2 in the state tournament, dropping his blood round match in the tiebreaker. The sophomore went 5-0 with all bonus point wins in North Hunterdon’s run to the Group 4 championship. He also won a Ron Mazzola Memorial Wrestling Tournament title.
138 – Gavin Duran, Ridge, Sr.
30-6, 2nd SCT, 1st District 16, 1st Region 4, Top 12 State
Duran showed he’s one of the state’s best wrestlers with his second consecutive top 12 finish in Atlantic City. He broke through with his first region title and won his second district crown. Duran was a four-year staple in the Red Devils’ lineup qualifying for four region and three state tournaments in his career, as well as placing in the top four in the SCT four times.
144 – Nate Keller, Immaculata, So.
40-5, 1st SCT, 1st District 8, 1st Region 2, Top 12 State
Keller had his second straight 40-win season and helped the Spartans to their first-ever win the sectional tournament. He repeated as a district champion and went 3-2 in the state tournament to finish in the top 12 for the second time. His highlights included being named the Somerset County Tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler for his 4-1 (SV) win over Duran, avenging a loss in last year’s semifinals. The sophomore also won the Walter Woods Holiday Tournament and reached the sixth consolation round in the Beast of the East.
150 – Rhett Washleski, Hunterdon Central, Jr.
41-5, 1st District 20, 2nd Region 5, State 7th
Washleski had a great two seasons as an underclassman but just missed placing in the state tournament. He broke through this winter by finishing seventh in Atlantic City to reach the podium. Washleski also took fifth at the Beast of the East and won his third district title and second Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament gold medal.
157 –Sean Love, Piscataway, Jr.
36-4, 2nd GMCT, 1st District 19, 2nd Region 5, State 5th
Love upped a strong sophomore season into superstar status as a junior. He went from 0-2 in the state tournament to reaching the podium, including a thrilling, late comeback to win 12-11 in the blood round. Love also won titles at the Mike Dessino Invitational and the A-Nice Invitational. He had a memorable series with St. Joseph’s Morgan Schwarz, in which he held a 2-1 edge, as well as a medical forfeit win in the state fifth-place match
165 – Cristian Gioia, Governor Livingston, Sr.
40-6, 1st UCT, 1st District 11, 2nd Region 3, State 8th
Gioia capped his terrific Highlanders career with his second straight state medal. He did it the hard way with three consecutive wrestleback wins after falling in the second round. Gioia also won his third district title and earned his first UCT crown after a pair of runner-up finishes. Gioia, who first advanced to the region as a freshman 132-pounder, also topped the podium this season at the Ricky I Memorial Tournament and Hunterdon Central Invitational.
175 – Evan Kinney, North Hunterdon, Sr.
36-5, 2nd H/W/S/T, 1st District 14, 1st Region 4
Kinney nearly doubled his win total from a 21-18 junior season and became a full-fledged star for the Lions. The senior captured district and region titles and went 5-0 in North Hunterdon’s run to the Group 4 title with all pins or tech falls. Kinney advanced to his second state tournament and won two matches. He also won the Ron Mazzola Memorial Wrestling Tournament and took third in the Robin Leff Tournament.
190 – Jake Zemsky, Westfield, Jr.
38-5, 2nd UCT, 1st District 13, 1st Region 4, State 7th
Zemsky is a rare three-year starter at 190 and the junior has made strides each season. This winter, Zemsky turned in his best performances by winning his first district and region titles and then reached the state podium with an eight-place finish.
215 – Nathan Faxon,Governor Livingston, Sr.

In Atlantic City, Faxon reached the quarterfinals and scored a pin in his blood-round match en route to a seventh-place finish to get on the podium. Faxon also won Ricky I Memorial Tournament and Hunterdon Central Invitational championships this season.
285 – Nicholas Duarte, Hillsborough, Jr.
34-7, 1st SCT, 1st District 20, 3rd Region 5
