Wisconsin basketball NCAA Tournament second-round opponent finalized
The Wisconsin Badgers will face the No. 6-seed BYU Cougars in the second round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament on Saturday.
The No. 3-seed Badgers clinched their ticket to the game with an 85-66 win over No. 14-seed Montana. While the Grizzlies held tough through the game's first 30 minutes, the Badgers' strong defense and offensive efficiency proved too much to overcome. Wisconsin shot 55.4% from the field in the triumph, holding Montana to just 39.7%.
Wisconsin's performance was encouraging, especially following its program-worst shooting performance in Sunday's Big Ten Tournament loss to Michigan. With that performance now firmly in the rear-view, Wisconsin appears to be trending toward peak form entering Saturday's season-defining second-round matchup.
BYU will meet the Badgers in that contest after an 80-71 win over No. 11-seed VCU on Thursday afternoon. Star duo Richie Saunders (16 points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals) and Egor Demin (15 points, four rebounds, two assists) led the winning effort. As expected, BYU received contributions from a deep lineup of contributors, with eight players scoring at least five points and three finishing in double-figures.
The Cougars are arguably under-seeded No. 6-line. They were KenPom's No. 24-ranked team in the country entering the tournament. The win over VCU, KenPom's No. 30 team, further bolsters that reality. Wisconsin is expected to have its hands full with a tougher-than-normal second-round opponent.
Tip time and television information for Wisconsin-BYU has yet to be announced. But entering Friday's full slate of East Region action, Wisconsin now has specific opponent preparation to focus on. The Cougars are all that stand between the Badgers and their first Sweet 16 trip since 2017.
