WIAA basketball: Marshfield aiming for history in Division 1 championship game
Marshfield is headed to the WIAA Division 1 state championship game Saturday night to face Wisconsin Lutheran after holding off Waunakee 57-47 in the state semifinal at the Kohl Center.
Marshfield coach Chris Fischer made clear this week that the Tigers had full intentions of taking care of business in their return to the state tournament after three decades, and on Friday against Waunakee, they did just that.
Brooks Hinson and Chris Pohl led the way for the Tigers offensively, with sharpshooter Hinson knocking in three 3-pointers en route to a game-high of 18 points and eight rebounds, while Pohl added in 17 points and four rebounds.
The Tigers' scoring tandem answered every call whenever Waunakee began to knock.
Holding Waunakee to 21 first-half points, the Tigers put on a balanced attack of offense and defense. Hinson is proud to see his team's hard work come to fruition, though he understands there is still a more significant task at hand.
"I've worked so hard for this. Our team has worked so hard for this … one more game," Hinson said.
Fischer talked after the game about not allowing the magnitude of the moment to overwhelm the team while preparing for the championship game. They want everything to look the same as it did in the regular season; it's just one more game, except Marshfield has yet to bring home the championship in its school's history.
On championship Saturday, the Tigers will face the formidable Vikings, who enter the Division 1 championship game amid a 9-game win streak. They wield four double-digit scorers, including junior guard Zavier Zens, who averages 22 points per game and holds Division 1 offers from Stetson, Toledo, and UW-Green Bay, and Kager Knueppel, brother of Duke sharpshooter Kon Knueppel, who is the team's second-leading scorer.
The Tigers tasted heartbreak last season after losing in the sectional final, but tomorrow afternoon at the Kohl Center, they will have an opportunity to bring home the first gold ball in school history.
