Through the first month of District 3-6A play, Weatherford Softball and Baseball are well in the mix of the playoff picture. Both programs faced challenges in their matchups over the past weekend for different reasons.
Six hits and seven RBI combined between Kennedy Kelly and Remington Meador spotlighted a 17-6 win for Weatherford over the Crowley Lady Eagles Friday.
The Lady Roos improved to 9-10 overall and 4-3 in District 3-6A, holding on to the fourth and final playoff spot entering Tuesday’s contest versus the first-place Mansfield Legacy Lady Broncos.
Although the final score showed an 11-run victory, head coach Jeff Lemons told the team how close the game actually was.
“We were the good, the bad and the ugly out there,” said Lemons. “That gets frustrating, but ultimately, the bottom line is it’s a win.”
After a few losses where Weatherford failed to finish games once taking a huge lead, Meador and the team took the win as an opportunity against a weaker team to boast themselves.
The Lady Roo catcher loved learning about teammates picking each other up, whether things are going their way or not.
Knowing that they must play a cleaner game defensively to stay in the mix of a tough district, Weatherford believes they’re on the same page.
“We know that these teams are strong and that we can be stronger than them,” said Meador. “We’re always keeping a positive mindset. If we get down or make mistakes, we forget about it and talk to each other.”
That was the message from Lemons and the coaching staff after the game was to let all the mistakes out now against Crowley and look ahead to the second round of district matchups.
Scoring 50 runs in their four games before the Legacy game, the focus for the Lady Roos is to avoid putting pressure on their pitcher and limiting the fielding mistakes.
The boys returned to district competition Tuesday night against North Crowley after a pair of losses to non-district opponents, Rockwall and Waxahachie, over the weekend.
Prior to the North Crowley contest, Weatherford’s record was 7-12-1 overall and 2-2 in district, sitting in the fifth spot of the standings behind Mansfield for the final ticket into the postseason.
