The Carolina Hurricanes fell 5-4 in a shootout to the Washington Capitals Thursday night at Capital One Arena.

The Canes blew a two-goal lead, but then rallied from a two-goal deficit to force overtime, before ultimately losing in the shootout.

After the game, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour spoke with the media in D.C. Here's what he had to say:

Rod Brind'Amour

On the game
: They had a good second and we had a good first and third. We had to kill some penalties and did a great job and then one in the overtime. I didn't love the second period, but the rest of the game, I thought we were on it.

On what went wrong in the second period: They got playing and it's a good team. We're not going to dominate the game. It's just not gonna happen. They took it to us that period and you've got to tip your hat, but I give credit to my guys too because we came back, dug in and gave ourselves a chance.

On the third period comeback: That's what you're going to have to do. You're going to have ups and downs. I thought the first period, we deserved way more. To only be up one was tough. They get that late one. For them, I know they didn't like that period, and we should of had more. That's the part where if you look back on the game, that's probably where we needed to get more out of it. But like I said, I'm happy with the way we came back.

On the team's resiliency: Like I said, the second wasn't a good period for us, but this team, they always find a way to dig in. I can count on my hands the amount of games where we were just terrible the whole game. It doesn't happen. We move on.
