As Arsenal prepare to face Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League quarter finals, midfielder-turned-forward Mikel Merino is fully aware of the challenge that lies ahead.
The Spanish international, who has been a standout performer for the Gunners this season, spoke to Mundo Deportivo ahead of the big European night—and couldn’t help but acknowledge the strength of the opposition.
Merino, once known for his work in midfield, has been transformed into a centre-forward by Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.
His adjustment to a more advanced role has been impressive, however, when asked about the Real Madrid squad—particularly their attacking line—Merino did not hesitate to show respect for the Spanish giants.

Merino pointed out that Madrid’s front line has found its rhythm after a short period of adaptation earlier in the season.
“I think they’re at an incredible level. They’re all players with incredible technical quality, and at the beginning of the season it may have taken them a while to adapt to each other.
“But they have managed to find that connection that players of their level always find,” he began saying.
He made it clear that Arsenal will need to stay focused throughout the match because Real Madrid’s quality can turn a game in a matter of seconds.
“It’s going to be a very tough game, very difficult because if you switch off mentally a little, they’re capable of finding those advantages.
“So far, we have played against very high-level opponents, so we have to be respectful, fearless, and eager.”
Praising Rodrygo
Despite being an opponent on the night, Merino showed his admiration for several Madrid players.
When asked which Real Madrid player he would most like to play alongside, the forward was full of praise for Rodrygo.
In his view, the Brazilian forward is not just talented but also incredibly complete. Merino highlighted Rodrygo’s technical ability, speed, and intelligence in the final third.
“They are all spectacular. Of the times I have played against them, one player I’d like to have in front of me as a teammate would be Rodrygo.
“I think he is a player who, I’m not going to say underrated because everyone knows the great level he has.
“He has tremendous potential, he is very good technically, he is very fast and very complete ...
