Unpacking Future Packers: No. 22, Texas DE Barryn Sorrell

The Unpacking Future Packers Countdown is a countdown of 100 prospects who the Green Bay Packers could select in the 2025 NFL draft.

There is no such thing as too many pass rushers and the Green Bay Packers could use another edge rusher or two to pair with Rashan Gary and Lukas Van Ness.

A potential target on Day 3 of the 2025 NFL Draft is Barryn Sorrell. The Texas defensive end checks in at No. 22 in the Unpacking Future Packers Countdown.

A native of Louisiana, Sorrell recorded 44 tackles, nine tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks during his sophomore season in 2022. The following season, Sorrell recorded five tackles for loss and four sacks. This past season, Sorrell recorded 44 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and six sacks.

"Sorrell came into the season last year as an on-field leader," CJ Vogel, a reporter for On Texas Football, said. "He was a player the younger guys looked up to and was consistently able to showcase his value by leading from the front."

Sorrell is a sturdy run defender. He sets a firm edge and isn't going to get bullied off his spot. He has strong hands and is able to snatch and toss with the best of them. The Texas defensive end has the lateral quickness to slither past offensive tackles and make plays behind the line of scrimmage. Over the past three seasons, he's recorded 66 run stops.

"He’s best in run support off the edge," Vogel said. "Sorrell is great at shedding blocks and strong enough to hold the point of attack on the edge even if he doesn’t initially beat his man."

Sorrell sees red as a pass rusher and plays with relentless energy and effort. Sorrell has an adequate first step off the edge and when he showcases his closing burst. He rushes with good pad level and converts speed to power to cave in the pocket. There are little wasted movements in his pass rush plan. This past season, he recorded a career-high 49 pressures and finished the past three seasons with 121.

"Pass rush is where Sorrell will need to show the most growth in the NFL," Vogel said. "One major positive for his game is that for four years, he was an effort leader and guy you couldn’t take off the field due to what he would give you from that perspective.

Sorrell put together a strong week of practice in Mobile at the Senior Bowl. The Texas defensive end was named the top defensive linemen on the American roster. Green Bay's defensive quality control coach led the American defensive line group in Mobile and got a first-hand look at Sorrell all week.

At the NFL Scouting Combine, Sorrell ran a 4.68 40-yard dash and 1.65 10-yard split. He also clocked a 4.36 short shuttle and a 7.06 3-cone. Those numbers back up why the Texas defensive end was No. 79 on Bruce ...
