Tottenham star on €10 million per year will leave the club this summer, MLS clubs interested – report
Tottenham Hotspur must reshuffle the pack in the summer transfer window. Spurs need additions in key areas of the pitch to avoid the kind of disappointing season they are currently enduring.
Tottenham sit in 13th place on the Premier League log, far away from the UEFA Champions League slots where they hope to be.
Some put it down to the plethora of injuries that ravaged Spurs, others blame manager Ange Postecoglou, and another faction points their fingers at underperforming players.
Several players on the Tottenham roster did not deliver this season. One of the most disappointing of the bunch is on-loan forward Timo Werner.
The German international has been woeful this season and was singled out by Postecoglou after one particularly horrendous performance as Tottenham drew Rangers 1-1 in the Europa League.
According to Florian Plettenberg, Werner will return to RB Leipzig this summer as Spurs refuse to activate his €12 million buy option.
Per the report, the 29-year-old does not want to move to another Bundesliga club. Premier League and Major League Soccer (MLS) sides are considering making moves for Werner, but his current salary at Leipzig is around €10m per year. It could be a stumbling block.
Injuries and poor form have kept Werner out of the Tottenham starting XI for weeks. Postecoglou has used him sporadically since his anonymous showing against Newcastle United in January.
The Tottenham hierarchy cannot say this was a scouting error. Extending Werner’s loan after his underwhelming stint last season was not the wisest decision.
Luckily, Spurs have already atoned for that error by signing Wilson Odobert. The potential addition of Mathys Tel permanently this summer also bolsters the attack. Tottenham can afford to let Werner return to Leipzig without fighting for replacements.
Spurs need to spend their money plugging other holes in defensive midfield and defence and sorting attacking depth as they bid to bounce back from a forgettable 2024/25 campaign.
