Tottenham decide against permanent purchase of Timo Werner
Florian Plettenberg reports that Timo Werner is heading back to his Bundesliga club at the end of the season. The German’s 18-month-loan with Tottenham Hotspur draws to a close at the end of the season. Some modest success in the Premier League last spring led to speculation that Spurs wanted to sign the 29-year-old on a permanent basis from RB Leipzig.
With no goals in his 18 league appearances this season, however, it appears as if club management at White Hart Lane has decided that Werner is not worth the €12m purchase option. Plettenberg notes that Werner’s future with Leipzig is very much contingent on whether Marco Rose remains the head coach of the German Red Bulls. The contentious relationship between the two was no secret.
The former Chelsea man could still generate interest from Premier League sides. Some Bundesliga clubs could conceivably also have interest. Moreover, per Plettenberg, there are enquires from America’s MLS. The 57-times-capped international currently earns approximately €10m via his current RB contract, valid until 2026. He maintains a €15m estimated market worth.
