Top transfer portal center eying visit to Auburn
Story updated to add new feature image
The top center in the transfer portal, sophomore Owen Freeman, is reportedly planning to visit Auburn in the coming weeks according to On3. Freeman averaged 16.7 points and 6.7 rebounds for an Iowa team that fired head coach Fran McCaffery following a disappointing season in 2024-2025.
The incoming junior is considered the consensus No. 1 center currently in the portal. A career 12.8 points per game scorer, Freeman averaged 10.6 points per contest across 22.8 minutes per game as a freshman before leading the Hawkeyes in points (16.7), rebounds (6.7) and blocks (1.8) per game this season. The 6-foot-10, 245-pound big man has started 44 of the 53 games he's appeared in during his college career.
Although the 20-year-old was a dominant force during the 19 games he started during his sophomore campaign, a finger injury forced Freeman to miss the entirety of February and March. The Hawkeyes were 11-8 in those 19 contests.
If Bruce Pearl and his staff are able to secure the talents of Freeman, it would immediately rejuvenize and Auburn front court set to lose National Player of the Year candidate Johni Broome and senior Dylan Cardwell next season. As it currently stands, Auburn's front court would likely be made up of current freshman Jakhi Howard, incoming four-star freshman Sebastian Williams-Adams, and possibly senior Chaney Johnson, if the NCAA were to grant the JUCO product another year of eligibility.
While it would be nearly impossible to replicate the production Broome has given the Tigers this season, a front court duo of Freeman and Johnson could provide Auburn with yet another elite set of big men.
