Sam Menzin, a Detroit Tigers assistant general manager, resigned Thursday before the team planned to terminate him for inappropriate behavior.
Two former Tigers employees said that Menzin sent them unsolicited lewd photos, according to a report published Monday in The Athletic.
“Upon being made aware of the allegations as to Sam Menzin’s conduct, the Club promptly completed an investigation,” the Tigers said in a statement given to the Free Press. “Before the Club could terminate Mr. Menzin, he resigned. This type of behavior is contrary to our standards and has absolutely no place within our organization. We have a positive and safe culture for our colleagues and will continue to emphasize respect, inclusion, and professionalism.”
The Tigers declined to elaborate what they were investigating.
Menzin started with the Tigers when Dave Dombrowski was the team president. He climbed through the ranks, becoming the team’s director of baseball operations and pro scouting in 2015.
When Scott Harris took over as the Tigers president of baseball operations, Menzin remained in the front office as an assistant general manager.
This spring, Menzin was seen around the team in Lakeland, Florida when the Tigers were at spring training.
While the allegations stem from alleged actions dating back years ago, the Tigers were not made aware of them until recently, according to a person who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly. Within a matter of days, Menzin resigned, according to the source.
