The Thomas Müller era at Bayern Munich will end after 25 years in summer because the contract of the forward will not be renewed beyond the season, both parties have said.
Müller, 35, joined Bayern in 2000 and has played 743 games for them, winning 33 trophies, including 12 Bundesliga titles, six German Cups and two Champions Leagues. The former German international also won the 2014 World Cup.
Müller said on Instagram that "the club made a conscious decision not to negotiate a new contract with me for next season. Even if this was not in line with my personal wishes, it is important that the club follows its convictions."
Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund said: "There’ll never be another one like him, that’s for sure, and he internalised FC Bayern from a young age. This decision was extremely hard, as everyone can understand."
Bayern said Müller would get a farewell match. Müller did not reveal whether he would retire or continue playing elsewhere.
