The Titans going all out for Cam Ward at Miami Pro Day makes their NFL Draft plan seem clear
Most of the time, NFL teams want to keep their NFL Draft plans close to the vest.
If you're a team like, say, the Tennessee Titans — who own the No. 1 overall pick in April's draft — you don't want other squads to know your intentions in advance. It could ruin potential negotiating positions in trades. It could muddy up plans to draft other prospects later in the draft. It's an advantageous place that could be ruined with the slightest over-share. Of course, that's not necessarily always a problem. If you have your guy, you have your guy.
And right now, the Titans are seemingly operating like they have their guy at No. 1: Miami quarterback Cam Ward.
Ahead of Ward's Miami Pro Day on Monday, the Titans didn't explicitly say they plan to select the 2024 Heisman Finalist with the top pick. But they didn't have to. The contingent they brought with them to Miami made their intentions pretty apparent. That's because the Titans went beyond the standard "general manager, head coach, and top scouts" group. According to Zac Jackson of The Athletic, they even brought their in-house TV and website production team.
Oh. Huh. Why would you need your content team on hand for a player who isn't officially part of your roster yet? It's almost as if the Titans are laying down every possible piece of the groundwork to draft Ward and quickly get their fanbase excited about him as a potential franchise quarterback with things like hype videos, interviews, and exclusive stories:
The Titans have their head coach, GM, team president and more from their football staff here at Miami. In case you wanted more of a tell, the Titans also have their in-house TV and website production team here for Cam Ward.
— Zac Jackson (@AkronJackson) March 24, 2025
There's still a chance that tidbits like this from the Titans are just a smokescreen. After all, purported generational talents like Colorado's Travis Hunter and Penn State's Abdul Carter could still be on Tennessee's radar. And no one would bat an eyelash if the Titans opted for either of those gifted young men. They are more than worthy of the No. 1 overall pick.
But that possibility seems a little far-fetched the moment you start involving your media professionals. If the Titans wanted to throw everyone off the scent of their NFL Draft plans, they're doing a terrible job of hiding it.
Then again, I'm not so sure they're even trying to hide it.
