Texans considered a top-15 team in NFL power rankings
With the first wave of NFL free agency wrapped up, attention now shifts to the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft. For the Houston Texans, landing the right player at No. 25 could make or break their chances of competing in the AFC.
NFL.com's Eric Edholm recently published an updated NFL power rankings following the initial wave of free agency and he has the Houston Texans ranked 14th. That's up four spots lower from Edholm's last update and the largest tumble of any team since the start of free agency.b
The biggest concern for Edholm regarding Houston? What else but the offensive line losing its best asset in five-time Pro Bowl tackle Laremy Tunsil for picks to the Washington Commanders.
"Right now, the plan would appear to be kicking Tytus Howard out to left tackle and playing Blake Fisher at right tackle," Edholm wrote. "The Texans could also flip those two, and there's still the draft left with which to add a potential OT starter, though picking 25th makes the chore tougher. Houston could move up six or seven spots in Round 1 by potentially dealing its extra third-round pick, but then again, the Texans are a bit lean on draft picks overall."
Houston did sign veteran offensive tackle Cam Robinson to a one-year deal, but he's only slightly an upgrade from what's currently on the roster. The Texans allowed 524 sacks last season, 52 of which were against Pro Bowl quarterback C.J. Stroud. Of the 54 allowed, only 2.5 were issued by Tunsil.
Meanwhile, Robinson gave up nine sacks and led all offensive tackles in pressures allowed with 63 last season between his stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Minnesota Vikings. The Texans also added Ed Ingram and Laken Tomlinson, but only one is expected to start while a rookie likely will take over on the opposing side.
Edholm did praise the Texans for adding defensive back C.J. Garnder-Johnson in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles for draft bust Kenyon Green, plus the addition of wide receiver Chrisitan Kirk, it's not enough to consider Houston a "winner" of the early free agent period.
"Are they still in that area code? I'm a bit leery, although I do believe Stroud rebounding in Year 3 keeps them well in contention," Edholm wrote.
The good news for Texans fans? Houston is still ranked first in the AFC South, above the Indianapolis Colts (No. 23), Jacksonville Jaguars (No. 30) and Tennessee Titans (No. 32). The Philadelphia Eagles are ranked No.
