Sunday's area college roundup: Assumption softball runs winning streak to seven games

Softball

Assumption 5, New Haven 4; Assumption 3, New Haven 2: The visiting Greyhounds (14-16, 7-1 NE10) swept the Chargers (8-20, 1-5) and extended their winning streak to seven games.

Grafton's Kaitlyn Cahill was 3 for 4 and had a solo homer to tie the game in the fourth and Grace Heim singled to left in the top of the seventh to drive in a run as Assumption held on to take the opener. Kaylee Lacomb had two hits for the Greyhounds and Kaelin Waldron struck out three and allowed three earned runs while going the distance in the circle.

Molly Green (RBI), Alyssa Johnson and Naomi Cohen (solo homer) all had two hits in the nightcap for Assumption, and Paige Cote fanned six and scattered six hits over seven innings.

Clark 2, Wheaton 1; Wheaton 4, Clark 2: Leominster's Megan Dube allowed one run on four hits while fanning four and also singled in the winning run in the third inning as the visiting Cougars (11-11, 2-4 NEWMAC) won the opener of a split with the Lyons (19-5, 4-2).

Grafton's Ella Molinari had a solo homer in the opener for Wheaton, and also drove in two in the nightcap.

Boston University 6, Holy Cross 1: Callie Thibault singled in a run as the host Crusaders (6-23) fell to the Terriers (25-11).

Former Littleton star Kasey Ricard improved to 15-7 after scattering five hits and allowing one run while fanning four to lead Boston University. Kylie Doherty, who starred at Nashoba Regional, singled twice and scored for the Terriers.

Nichols 3, Wentworth 1; Nichols 3, Wentworth 2: Pinch runner Mary Jo-Laudati took third on a sacrifice bunt from Erin Gour and scored on an error in the top of the eighth as the Bison (16-5, 4-1 CNE) swept the Leopards (11-12, 1-4).

Bailey Littlefield was 2 for 3 with two RBIs to give Nichols a 2-0 lead in the nightcap. Ava Slavinsky and Chloe Steiniger each had two hits in the opener for the Bison, while Gour tripled and drove in a run.

Baseball

Mass Maritime 8, Fitchburg State 2; Mass Maritime 7, Fitchburg State 2: Adam Koza homered in the opener, but the visiting Falcons (7-10, 2-4 MASCAC) were swept by the Buccaneers (13-10, 4-2).

Holy Cross 4, Army 3 (7 innings); Army 6, Holy Cross 0: C.J. Egrie scored when he hustled home on a throw to first after a dropped third strike play to first to force out Gianni Royer to tie the game and the host Crusaders took the lead on a single to right center by John LaFleur that plated Simon Landry as Holy Cross took the first game of a split with the Black Knights.

Egrie and teammate Jimmy King each singled and doubled to lead the Holy Cross offense in the opener. Royer had two hits in the nightcap for the Crusaders.

Nichols 2, Suffolk 1; Nichols 7, Suffolk 1: Senior Karl Miller was 3 for 7 with a homer and two RBIs on the day as the visiting Bison (11-10, 3-4 CNE) swept the Rams (7-14, 1-4).

Nichols senior Andrew Croteau played in his 156th career game, breaking the school record held by former teammate Kyle Bouchard.

The Bison notched a walk-off win in the opener when Julian Galvin singled to left in the ninth and Adam Pivacek scored on an error on the play.
