Students learn through competition and commitment
ASHTABULA — The addition of a dual meet season for area high school quiz bowl teams about a decade ago has helped increased participation throughout the county.
More than 110 names are on the rosters of nine county high schools that participated in Quiz Bowl season and the Scholastic Bowl tournament, which took place Saturday at Kent State Ashtabula.
A-Tech, Conneaut, Edgewood, Geneva, Lakeside, Jefferson Area, Pymatuning Valley, Grand River Academy, and Saint John high schools participated in the dual meet season.
Grand River Academy students were on spring break this weekend and could not participate in the Scholastic Bowl.
The dual meet league started in 2015 and has helped the growth of the Scholastic Bowl, and increased the confidence in many students, team advisors said Saturday.
“I really love the competition .... and testing my knowledge,” said Zane Ketola, of the Jefferson Area High School team that won the Scholastic Bowl and the league during the regular season.
Two area teams have especially large squads, with Geneva High School listing 26 competitors on their roster, and Edgewood High School, 18.
Geneva’s advisor, Anne Markijohn, said she has been involved in the competition for 10 years. “I love the kids. They are so fun to watch.”
She said a by-product is they gain confidence through the competition and interactions with teammates and competitors.
JAHS Scholastic Bowl advisor Alyssa Berrier said her senior-dominated team had some underclassmen come to practices, and she hopes that will spur them to participate next year.
“I like seeing how excited the kids get when they win,” she said.
Edgewood team advisor Christina Fischer said she was losing a lot of competitors after last year, so she made the Quiz Bowl team an emphasis at the academic awards banquet.
Many teams start practice in the fall, and pick up the pace in January when the dual meet season gets rolling.
Fischer said the team moves from one practice in the fall to multiple sessions in the winter. She said she recruits students throughout the year.
“I like it [the competition], so I want it to continue,” she said.
“I think the key ... is getting a few kids hooked and they tell their friends,” Fischer said.
Lakeside advisor Louis Murphy said the program is similar to sports. He was a star tennis player at JALS and now coaches collegiate tennis. He said the anticipation needed in an athletic event is similar to quiz bowl skills.
“You have to be quick on the buzzer,” he said.
Conneaut advisor Artemis Mermis said the dual meet season is a great way to learn how to handle the questions when the Scholastic Bowl comes around in March.
